Biography

Samuel Henry John Worthington was born on 2 August 1976 in Godalming, Surrey, England. Moving with his family to Perth, Western Australia at the age of six months, he spent his childhood and early youth there. After working briefly as a bricklayer on construction sites during his youth, he followed his passion for acting by enrolling in the prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), from which he graduated in 1998. Following his graduation, the actor began his career in Australian television and cinema, appearing in productions such as "Bootmen" (2000), "Dirty Deeds" (2002), and "Gettin' Square" (2003). However, it was the critically acclaimed independent drama "Somersault" (2004) that propelled him to stardom in his home country and earned him an Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award for Best Actor. Following his success in Australia, Worthington turned to international projects, making his major Hollywood debut as Marcus Wright in the film "Terminator Salvation" (2009).

However, the role that turned him into a global icon and secured his lasting place in cinema history was Jake Sully in James Cameron's groundbreaking science fiction epic "Avatar" (2009), which he portrayed. This film became the highest-grossing movie of all time, creating an unprecedented turning point in Worthington's career. Riding the momentum brought by "Avatar," the actor became one of the most sought-after faces in action and fantasy cinema, bringing Perseus to life in "Clash of the Titans" (2010) and its sequel "Wrath of the Titans" (2012). During the same period, he also voiced the main character Alex Mason in the popular video game series "Call of Duty: Black Ops" (2010), gaining a wide fanbase in the gaming world. In subsequent years, Worthington continued to enrich his career with projects across different genres; he appeared in films such as the mountaineering thriller based on a true story "Everest" (2015), Mel Gibson's Oscar-winning war drama "Hacksaw Ridge" (2016), the fantasy drama "The Shack" (2017), and the psychological thriller "Fractured" (2019).

Recently, he returned to the series with "Avatar: The Way of Water" (2022), a role that has now entered cinema history, continuing the franchise's success. Worthington is set to star in other upcoming "Avatar" sequels and continue diversifying his career by appearing in prestigious television projects such as "Under the Banner of Heaven" (2022).
