William Charles Merrick was born on 9 April 1993 in Ledbury, Herefordshire, England.
Merrick spent his childhood years in western England and developed an interest in stage arts from a young age.
After completing his education at The Downs School and Dean Close School, the actor drew attention for his particular talent in drama and became one of the students to achieve the highest national scores in GCSE drama examinations.
During his youth, he performed in various theatre productions at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, thereby enhancing his acting experience.
The most significant turning point in Merrick's professional career occurred when he was cast in the third series of the British youth drama "Skins" (2011–2012).
The character of Alo Creevey, a pure-hearted, loyal farm boy with a strong sense of humour that he portrayed in the series, earned him a wide fanbase.
This performance was also acclaimed by critics and resulted in him receiving a Royal Television Society Award.
Following his success in "Skins", he began to find more opportunities in both television and cinema.

In 2013, he joined the cast of Richard Curtis's beloved romantic comedy-drama film "About Time," portraying the character Jay. During the same period, he appeared as Arthur Solway in the episode "Nightmare in Silver" of the series "Doctor Who" and in BBC's popular period drama "Poldark" (2017). Another significant long-running television project was the comedy series "Dead Pixels" (2019–2021), which satirizes the online gaming world. Through his portrayal of Nicky in this series, he once again demonstrated his comedic talent. In his film career, Merrick appeared in productions such as "Modern Life Is Rubbish" (2017) and the Netflix horror film "A Classic Horror Story" (2021). He then took a step into one of the largest productions of his career with the 2025 film "F1." In this high-budget sports drama, starring Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, he brought to life the character Nickleby, an engineer for the fictional APXGP racing team. For the role, which involved portraying an engineer who plays a key part in the team's strategic decisions, he underwent technical preparation.
