Biography
William Thomas Sadler was born on April 13, 1950, in Buffalo, New York.
Spending his childhood years on a farm, Sadler developed an early interest in music and began playing stringed instruments such as the banjo and guitar; during high school, he formed his own musical group under the nickname "Banjo Bill."
As his passion for acting took precedence, he shifted his academic focus accordingly: first earning his degree at the State University of New York, then pursuing a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in acting at prestigious Cornell University.
Following graduation, he stepped onto stage and laid the foundations of his career in New York.
Spending the first twelve years of his career intensely on stage, Sadler garnered significant acclaim within theatrical circles for his performance in Neil Simon's play *Biloxi Blues*.
Building upon this strong theatrical foundation, he transitioned to television and film starting in the early 1980s.
After taking minor roles in various series and films such as *Project X* (1987), he achieved his breakthrough with a role that introduced him to cinema audiences and solidified his place in Hollywood: portraying the ruthless, cool-headed villain Colonel Stuart in *Die Hard 2* (1990).
This role opened doors for him as a sought-after character actor, particularly in action and thriller genres. In addition to portraying the tough guy image in action films, Sadler also demonstrated his comedic and dramatic talents, earning an iconic place in pop culture with his portrayal of Azrael in the second installment of the "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" franchise, "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey" (1991). Another unforgettable turning point in his career and a landmark moment in cinema history was his role as Heywood, a cheerful and loyal inmate, in Frank Darabont's beloved classic "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994). Years later, working again with the same director on another Stephen King adaptation, he further showcased his dramatic depth in "The Green Mile" (1999) and "The Mist" (2007). Since the 2000s, this highly productive veteran actor has left an indelible mark on both cinema and television, notably establishing a lasting presence in the hearts of TV audiences with his portrayal of Sheriff Jim Valenti in the science fiction series "Roswell" (1999–2002).
His inclusion in "Iron Man 3" (2013) within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, along with his portrayal of U.S. President Matthew Ellis in various Marvel series, brought him to a new generation of audiences. Recently, Sadler returned to his iconic role as Azrael in "Bill & Ted Face the Music" (2020), after many years. Beyond his acting career, he continues to pursue his lifelong passion for music, which he has maintained since his youth. With hundreds of projects spanning a half-century career, William Sadler remains an active and respected figure in Hollywood as one of the most distinguished and consistent representatives of character acting, continuing to take on new roles today.
