"Spirits Realm: They Are Among Us," appearing as the sixth installment in the series, presents a production that both preserves its own universe and pushes certain boundaries. The narrative constructs a consistent theme across three generations by exploring how Gemma's past traumatic experiences reflect upon her daughter's present life; this structural choice prompts reflection on themes such as the severance of familial bonds and the intrusion of ghostly entities into reality. Director Jacob Chase successfully delivers the tension expected from the genre by manipulating abstract visual elements, particularly the anxiety in scenes set within a dental clinic and the claustrophobic sensation in the dentist's chair. However, beyond these powerful moments, the film relies excessively on simple jump scares based on sound effects, aiming for a comfortable horror experience rather than cultivating the deep atmospheric magic established in James Wan's early films. Character development progresses primarily through the theme of young mothers overwhelmed by their burdens, yet it occasionally veers away from anticipated emotional depth toward plot progression, leaving an impression that the story fails to fully realize its potential.

Pros & Cons

✔ Pros

  • The narrative structure, which constructs the tragic history of three generations within the same household, effectively conveys the weight of time and the intergenerational reflection of trauma.
  • The abstract visual elements, such as the tension in the scenes of the dental clinic and the feeling of confinement in the goalkeeper's chair, successfully deliver the suspense that the genre demands.
  • Amelia Eve's powerful, established lead performance and Lin Shaye's nostalgic presence that ties together the series form the film's brightest moments.

✖ Cons

  • The film remains overly reliant on simple jump scares based on sound effects, avoiding the deep atmospheric magic created by James Wan's early films.
  • Character development, while advancing through the theme of young mothers being crushed under their burdens, sometimes shifts away from the expected emotional depth toward the flow of the plot.
