After a mysterious cosmic event tore Oak Street from its ordinary suburban existence and transported it entirely to an unknown realm, the Platt family discovers that their only chance of survival lies in remaining tightly bound to one another. In this film directed by David Robert Mitchell, the event of Oak Street suddenly being transported to a time period ruled by dinosaurs symbolizes the disruption of the Platt family's ordinary suburban life. As indicated in the summary, the characters' greatest strength derives from their bonds with one another, which forms the foundational premise of the film's narrative. This situation blends the expected themes of chaos and survival inherent to the genre with an emotional coherence built upon preserving family ties. The director's emphasis on the helplessness created by the event and the environment becoming unrecognizable positions the audience within a mysterious atmosphere while prompting reflection on the significance of human relationships.
