The film recognizes that a real criminal case must be handled through the lens of television ethics, yet in doing so, it struggles with its own narrative. Director Lance Oppenheim's stylistic excesses create a layer of dust over deep themes such as media consumption and the transformation of human suffering into entertainment, thereby exhausting the audience. Robert Pattinson's convincing performance as Chris Hansen, along with the strong supporting roles played by Skyler Gisondo and Merritt Wever, manage to maintain the characters' appeal even where the script falls short. However, despite this powerful cast, the film fails to sufficiently develop its ideas, focusing instead on the surface appearance of the concept and thereby obscuring its core message.
