Biography
Connie Inge-Lise Nielsen was born on July 3, 1965, in Frederikshavn, Denmark.
She grew up in a small village called Elling as the daughter of a bus driver and an insurance agent.
Her interest in art began at an early age thanks to her mother, who wrote and acted in local revues.
Following this passion, she moved to Paris at the age of 18 and took her first steps in modeling and acting careers there.
She then went to Italy, where she studied drama at a school in Rome and received masterclasses on acting in Milan.
In the early years of her career, she worked primarily in French and Italian productions across Europe.
Nielsen's major breakthrough in Hollywood came with the 1997 thriller "The Devil's Advocate".
In this film, she delivered a striking performance alongside names such as Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino.
Following this role, she strengthened her position in Hollywood by taking significant supporting roles in films such as "Permanent Midnight" (1998), "Rushmore" (1998), and "Soldier" (1998).
However, it was his role in Ridley Scott's 2000 epic film "Gladiator" (Gladiator) that propelled him to international stardom and became the most renowned role of his career. In this film, he portrayed Maximus' former love and Lucilla, the sister of Emperor Commodus; the movie achieved massive box office success worldwide and received critical acclaim for Nielsen's performance. Following "Gladiator," Nielsen continued to appear in Hollywood productions across various genres, including "Mission to Mars" (2000), where he shared the lead role with Robin Williams, the psychological thriller "One Hour Photo" (2002), and "Basic" (2003), in which he starred alongside John Travolta. In 2004, Nielsen returned to Danish cinema with Susanne Bier's film "Brødre" (Brothers), for which she won Denmark's most prestigious film award, the Bodil Award, as well as the Best Actress award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival.
In the 2010s, Nielsen continued his career in both cinema and television, portraying Detective Dani Beck in the series "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (2006) for a period, and appearing in shows such as "Boss" (2011–2012) and "The Following" (2014). Another significant role that further solidified his recognition among wide audiences came within the DC Extended Universe. He first played Hippolyta, the Amazon Queen and Diana's mother, in the 2017 film "Wonder Woman." He reprised this role in "Justice League" (2017) and "Wonder Woman 1984" (2020). In recent years, he has demonstrated his versatility by appearing in productions such as the action film "Nobody" (2021), starring Bob Odenkirk. Nielsen returned to the screen with a new role as Lucilla in the 2024 film "Gladiator II."
