Biography
Diane Lane was born in New York, USA, on January 22, 1965.
The daughter of a drama coach father and a nightclub singer mother, Lane began her journey in the spotlight at a very young age and took her first step into professional acting at just six years old with La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club.
She made her cinematic debut with the 1979 film "A Little Romance"; her performance in that film led legendary actor Laurence Olivier to describe her as "the new Grace Kelly."
This brilliant start established her as one of Hollywood's most notable figures at a young age.
In the early 1980s, Lane became one of director Francis Ford Coppola's favorite actors, appearing in films such as "The Outsiders" (1983), "Rumble Fish" (1983), and "The Cotton Club" (1984), securing her place among youth icons.
However, a turning point in her career came with her performance in the 1989 miniseries "Lonesome Dove," which earned her an Emmy Award nomination.
For Lane, whose 1990s were spent working across various genres, a true artistic renaissance arrived with the 1999 independent film "A Walk on the Moon."
Her performance in this film was so acclaimed by critics that it opened the doors to a new, more mature chapter in her career. The peak of Diane Lane's career was the 2002 erotic thriller "Unfaithful." In this film, which she starred in alongside Richard Gere, Lane portrayed Connie Sumner, a woman who finds happiness in her marriage but is drawn into an illicit affair; her bold and profound performance earned her nominations for Best Actress at both the Oscars and the Golden Globes. Immediately following this, she proved her success in the romantic comedy/drama genre with "Under the Tuscan Sun" (2003), adapted from Frances Mayes' best-selling book, earning another Golden Globe nomination. This film became one of Lane's most beloved and frequently rewatched works. In recent years, Lane has also appeared in box office record-breaking films, taking on the role of Martha Kent, Superman's adoptive mother, in the DC Extended Universe. She brought this character to life in "Man of Steel" (2013), "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (2016), and "Justice League" (2017/2021).
She continues to receive critical acclaim for her role as Slim Keith in Ryan Murphy's anthology series "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans" (2024) and for sharing the lead role in the thriller "Let Him Go" (2020) with Kevin Costner. Diane Lane has maintained her status as one of Hollywood's most respected actresses, carrying forward a career that began as a child star with her elegance and emotional depth.
