Biography

Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa was born on August 1, 1979, in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. His father is of Hawaiian Native descent, and his mother is of German, Irish, and Native American heritage; Momoa spent his childhood with his mother in Iowa. During his youth, while studying marine biology and working at a surf shop in Hawaii, he was discovered and launched his modeling career. Soon after turning to acting, Momoa gained his first acting experience by portraying the character Jason Ioane in the series "Baywatch Hawaii" (1999–2001). In the early years of his acting career, appearing in shows such as "North Shore" (2004–2005), Momoa achieved wider recognition through his role as Ronon Dex, a warrior, in the popular science fiction series "Stargate Atlantis" (2005–2009). This role allowed him to showcase his physical strength and screen charisma. The major breakthrough in Momoa's career occurred with his portrayal of Khal Drogo, the leader of the Dothraki, in the first season of HBO's globally acclaimed fantasy series "Game of Thrones" (2011).

Although the character's lifespan in the series was short, MoMa's powerful performance and the character's iconic status propelled his international recognition to new heights. In the same year, he began solidifying his place in action cinema by portraying the lead role in the film "Conan the Barbarian." However, the role that transformed Jason Momoa into a global superstar and one of the key figures of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) was Arthur Curry / Aquaman. Initially appearing in a brief role in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (2016), he portrayed Aquaman more prominently in "Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox" (2017). The character's solo film, "Aquaman" (2018), achieved massive success with worldwide box office earnings exceeding $1 billion, becoming the highest-grossing film in the DCEU. Momoa reprised the role in "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" (2023) and appeared alongside the character in various other DC projects.

In addition to his role as Aquaman, Jason Momoa portrayed the skilled warrior Duncan Idaho in Denis Villeneuve's highly acclaimed science fiction epic "Dune: Part One" (2021) and its sequel "Dune: Part Two" (2024). He played Baba Voss, the leader of a tribe who has lost their sight, in the Apple TV+ series "See" (2019-2022), and appeared as the flamboyant villain Dante Reyes in "Fast X" (2023). Beyond acting, Momoa ventured into directing with the 2014 film "Road to Paloma," which he also wrote and starred in. Additionally, he is an active environmental advocate, particularly focused on ocean conservation. Through his production company, he develops various projects and shares his interests and travels with audiences through the documentary series "On the Roam" (2024-present), available on Max.
