Kane Parsons' first feature film constructs a tension that pushes boundaries through the journey of a therapist attempting to rescue a patient lost in an unknown dimension. In its first half, the raw, handmade shooting technique and the sense of delay created through static, geometric corridors successfully harness the genre's atmospheric potential, evoking a profound liminal horror in the viewer. However, in the second half, the narrative momentum weakens, and visual set pieces undermine the previously built tension, failing to meet expectations. Although the director possesses aesthetic sensitivity, they struggle to demonstrate proficiency as an effective storyteller; this leaves the film with both a strong beginning and an inadequate ending.
Pros & Cons
✔ Pros
- In its first half, the film successfully harnesses the genre's atmospheric potential by employing handcrafted shooting techniques and stagnant corridors to evoke a sense of delay that instills in the viewer a profound liminal horror.
- Keeping the entire environment brightly and evenly lit rather than shrouded in darkness is an excellent method for evoking a pure, unsettling fear of confined spaces.
- The sound design maintains a tense atmosphere by continuously heightening the audience's anxiety, delivering cinematic cohesion in the first half.
✖ Cons
- In the second half, the narrative momentum is killed, ruining the previous build-up, and the visual presentations fail to meet expectations.
- The claim that the young director has been crowned as a new voice in the genre is unjustified and premature.
