Story

Travis is a silent man.
He shares his secrets only through the roads.
With his red hat, he challenges on foot the paths that most people struggle to traverse even by car.
One day, at his brother's invitation, Travis returns to civilization.
At home, he is greeted by his brother's wife and his own son.
Initially rejecting a civilized and rule-bound life, Travis begins to adapt for the sake of his son.
And gradually, he decides to do something he had long delayed: before returning to the roads again, to find his ex-wife.
Wim Wenders' film easily ranks among the most impactful films of all time.
Its extraordinary character study, its exploration of settled life and conformity, and its unforgettable final scene—featuring a magnificent encounter—make it one of the peaks of the 20th century.

The film challenges the boundaries of the drama genre centered on long journeys, immersing the audience in a slow-paced and thought-provoking atmosphere. Character development is structured around a man's search for identity following a traumatic event, ensuring strong thematic consistency with themes such as resistance to conformity. The trust relationships established and family bonds reformed throughout the journey gain organic coherence with developments in the film's final quarter. Thanks to these structural choices, the film offers a profound cinematic experience by focusing not only on the plot but also on the characters' inner transformation.

Pros & Cons

✔ Pros

  • Harry Dean Stanton's portrayal of the forgetful character Travis is highlighted as the film's strongest aspect, leaving a profound impact on the audience.
  • The visual language constructed through scenes of long journeys successfully reflects the symbolic meaning of roads, thereby enriching the film aesthetically.
  • The construction of relationships between characters based on mutual trust offers viewers an emotionally engaging and authentic experience.

✖ Cons

  • A slow pace and minimalist dialogue may fail to meet expectations by offering an unengaging experience for a general audience.
