Story

Post-World War II New Jersey. Grace, having lost her husband in the war, lives in a large mansion with her two children who are sensitive to sunlight. Three people visit the house where the curtains are always drawn tightly shut: an elderly woman and man, and a mute young girl. While Grace seeks assistants to manage her household, she employs these individuals but warns them about her children's health condition. Meanwhile, Grace's daughter Anne believes that a boy named Victor is living with them in the house. Due to the thick fog surrounding the estate, which cuts off contact with the town, Grace encounters evidence suggesting that her daughter's stories might be true. At this point, she begins to suspect even the people she has taken on as helpers. A tension-filled production whose power lies largely in its surprising ending.

Reviewed by

The film directed by Alejandro Amenábar successfully maintains a constant sense of tension by utilizing the atmosphere of a secluded home inhabited by light-sensitive children. Strengthened by its surprising conclusion, the movie adeptly handles the genre's essential elements of mystery with representative depth, leveraging the characters' internal conflicts and the ghostly ambiance created by the surrounding misty environment. Throughout its narrative structure, the pacing slows as events unfold gradually, prompting doubt in the audience while preserving thematic consistency. Character development is particularly evident in Grace's steadfast attachment to her family bonds and the process of having her trust in new employees shattered.

Pros & Cons

✔ Pros

  • The ghostly atmosphere created by dark, enclosed spaces keeps the audience in a state of deep tension.
  • Nicole Kidman's lead performance successfully reflects the character's inner conflicts and maternal love.
  • The narrative structure strengthened by a surprising conclusion grounds the elements of suspicion constructed throughout the entire film on a logical foundation.

✖ Cons

  • The plot, advancing through Grace's suspicions, fails to provide a sufficiently satisfying resolution at the anticipated point of tension.
